Plants in the Kalahari Desert
Over four hundred species of plants have been identified in the Kalahari Desert. The sand in the Kalahari desert is better at retaining water, which in turn allows it to grow more plants than most of the other deserts in the world.
Camel thorn tree- Practically the only tree in the Kalahari desert that has adapted to the desert environment. The Camelthorn tree provides nutrients for the plants surrounding it which grow densely around it, and those plants leaves are food for the animals.
Hoodia Cactus- The hoodia cactus grow in high temperatures but takes many years to mature. In history the hoodia cactus was a great help to the hunter-gathers who ate it when they were about to starve on long hunting journeys. Recently scientists have discovered a chemical that tricks the brain into thinking that its not hungry. So now the hoodia cactus's chemicals are used to make diet pills.
Horned melon tree- The horned melon tree belongs to the melon and the cucumber families. The tree is famous for its fruit, the triwano, which resembles a spiny oval melon. The leaves and stems have fuzz and its taste is of cucumber and banana.
